PREGNANCY CARE

Pregnancy Planning

Pregnancy planning is recommended for all women and couples. A pregnancy planning consult aims to assess and optimise the health of women planning pregnancy and their partner.

A woman’s health and wellbeing before conception can affect her baby’s health and development, there are many factors to consider prior to becoming pregnant to give the best chance of a healthy pregnancy and baby.

Dr Graham provides advice around investigations and screening that is recommended prior to becoming pregnant, as well as lifestyle factors to optimise fertility.

You are pregnant

We recommend the first pregnancy visit take place prior to 8 weeks. At this visit you will be provided with information regarding ongoing pregnancy care as well as investigations that are recommended through the first trimester and beyond.

Dr Graham is accredited to provide antenatal shared care in conjunction with The Royal Hospital for Women. Shared care is for women with uncomplicated pregnancies who will deliver at RHW. It provides personalised and continuous care with your GP before and after delivery. It provides convenience and expert care and is a more affordable option compared to private obstetric care.

CHILDHOOD VACCINATIONS

Please remember to bring your Blue Book with you so we can keep it up to date.

Immunisation from birth is highly recommended for all Australian children. The National Immunisation Program covers the cost of routine childhood immunisations recommended for all children in Australia.

Routine childhood immunisations help to protect your child against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough (pertussis), polio, pneumococcal disease, meningococcal C disease, hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), rotavirus, chickenpox (varicella), measles, mumps and rubella (German measles) and influenza.

By law, there are particular immunisation requirements that your child needs to meet in order to go to childcare, kindergarten and primary school and childhood immunisations must be up-to-date before your child starts childcare and kindergarten.

The current NSW immunisation schedule can be found at: https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation/publications/nsw-immunisation-schedule.pdf

Bexsero® (Meningitis B) is not currently part of the NSW Childhood Immunisation Schedule, though it has been adopted in the Schedule by other Australian states and is highly recommended.

Depending on the age of your child the regime of vaccination may vary.

  • 3 dose schedule: children aged 6 weeks to 12 months of age

  • 2 dose schedule: children 12 months of age+

Bexsero can be safely administered with other National Immunisation Program (NIP) vaccines. If you are interested in Bexsero or would like further information book an appointment with Dr Graham.

 Preparing for Bexsero®

  • Fever (≥ 38.5°C) in young children aged less than 2 years is a common and expected adverse event following Bexsero administration.

  • Paracetamol is recommended with every dose of Bexsero for those less than 2 years of age.

  • The 1st dose of paracetamol is recommended prior to, or within 30-minutes of vaccination.
